TALK DESCRIPTIONS:

Cori Dean –  (Not Just) Surviving the Teen Years

Living with teens is always an adventure. Homeschooling them can be a roller coaster. When anticipating the adolescent years, many parents approach with fear and caution but the principles that governed early education can still speak to parenting and teaching our older kids and can even propel us into the best part of this journey yet. Our teens are seeking purpose and vision as they transition into independence. They need the well-established trails of discipline that deliver strong character and spiritual strength. They crave healthy relationships with their family and others. They continue to require inspiration to learn as they blossom into the young adults that the Lord planned for them to be. Join Cori Dean as she shares lessons from her journey of more than 20 years of parenting and homeschooling teens.

In this seminar we will talk about why you might need various records or reports and how to best prepare them. With a focus on high school documentation, we will look at how to grade our students, report cards, portfolios, and transcripts.

Woody Robertson – How To Homeschool High School

In this session, Woody practically walks parents through the high school years and provides a fresh look at the unique opportunities of homeschoolers. He’ll talk about dual credit, transcripts, and getting ready for college. But, most of all, he’ll discuss how to escape the conveyor belt of modern education confining a student to a curriculum’s prescribed scope and sequence. Instead he’ll encourage a personalized education which gives students autonomy to learn at their pace and ability, provides hands-on application and ultimately inspire lifelong learners.

What does the CM education look like for these critical years? Sarah has experimented over the years with many different daily routines and ways of implementing the CM style in her home, and feels she has finally found a strong and comfortable place as she facilitates the Charlotte Mason education of her children.  Come for a relaxed conversation and be inspired in what is sometimes otherwise a daunting methodology.

Bonnie Getty and Laurie Pruim – Homeschooling High School and Beyond

Homeschooling through high school is a daunting proposition for many families. How do we know if we’ve covered the right things? Will the subjects we’ve studied be recognized by postsecondary institutions so our child can get the further education and vocation they desire? All of these are valid questions, but they should not paralyze the homeschool parent or scare the family away from trying. Bonnie Getty and Laurie Pruim have both successfully graduated high school students from home and are going to share their varied experiences of what they did and how well it worked. Come ready with questions and come ready to be encouraged. You can do this!

Nellie Vander Hout & Grace Vander Meulen – Homeschooling through High School

Who’s more nervous to start high school, the student or the parents? This workshop will endeavor to ease the nerves of parents who have come to this stage in the home schooling journey and are finding themselves anxious about this next big step. Various aspects of home schooling at the high school level will be discussed, including attitudes, schedules, curriculum options, co-ops, planning for post-secondary studies, extra-curricular considerations, etc.; basically the nitty-gritty of “doing” high school at home. They don’t claim to have all the answers, but these sisters are happy to share some tips and encouragement for anyone considering home schooling during the teen years.

Dr. Jay Wile – Why Homeschool Through High School

Using data gathered from many different sources, including his own experiences, Dr. Wile shows that the last place a student can get an adequate high school education is in the typical public high school.

Dr. Jay Wile – “Teaching” High School at Home

In this seminar, Dr. Jay L. Wile explains how any parent can help his or her children learn science at the upper levels. He is a staunch advocate of homeschooling a student all the way through the high school years. Dr. Wile agrees that most parents do not have the ability to teach the high school sciences at home, but he also contends that this is not a problem. By the time a homeschooled student reaches high school, both the student and the parent should be able to learn by reading. Thus, Dr. Wile admonishes the parent to learn the subject right along with the student. With both the parent and the student helping each other learn, an upper level science experience can be equally rewarding for both! Finally, Dr. Wile discusses the curriculum that will make it possible for the homeschooling parent to provide a quality high school science education for his or her children.
